Interview Magic – 4 interviews got 3 job offers in 3 weeks during the “recession”
“If you could keep me somewhat anonymous that would be cool” …..Yes I GET THAT ALL THE TIME!
I want to share this with all of you. With all this talk of recessions and depressions everyone seems to be on pins and needles. Earlier this week someone…who wants to remain anonymous …. Sent me this. For obvious reasons they do not want the company that they chose to know what was used on them. At the end of this article is a video you have to see. It is a sneaky preview of Interview Magic DVD.
……
Hi Tom and Kim,
I wrote a bit more than I was planning to write! But I think the power of the experience was in the specifics so it’s hard to summarize a lot of it.
It all started earlier this year when I realized I hated my job. I really liked the company I worked for and various reasons I didn’t want to leave, so I spent quite a few months trying to find an alternative within the same company. It didn’t work so I decided to quit. Leading up to this numerous people had told me of the current “recession”.
I had talked to people working in the same field as myself who had been out of work for 6, 9 even 12 months, but I decided to quit anyway because I really was unhappy & the stress of the situation was really bringing me down & adversely affecting other areas of my life e.g. my health.
My plan….. I had the finances to keep me going for about 6 months of unemployment. For the first 3 months of job hunting I decided to be quite selective – only to apply to places that met at least 80% of my job requirements (e.g. good company, good salary, convenient location, etc). If in 3 months I hadn’t found a job, my plan was to start applying for anything and everything. One of my ideal job requirements was also to try and find a part time job. This would enable me to have a stable monthly income, whilst giving me some extra time to investigate some more ‘fun’ career / income options.
One of the first things I did was watch Interview Magic. I had bought it a couple of years ago after attending the Rapport & Anchoring boot camp, but it had just sat on a shelf gathering dust. I also made notes & ended up watching it again the night before every interview I went on.
Over the space of about a month, I went on interviews for 4 jobs. One of them never got back to me, which was fine because during the interview I decided it wasn’t somewhere that I wanted to work anyway. So that leaves 3 jobs:
Job 1 – A Contract role, via a recruitment agent, paid on a day rate
Job 2 – A permanent role with a small company offering part time hours
Job 3 – A permanent role with a great global employer, but with full time hours
Job 1 - This was with a company that I didn’t really want to work for, but as a contract role the money was great so I decided to pursue it to see where it would go & to use it to practice some Interview Magic skills. I went for a first and then second interview and got offered the position. I turned it down claiming the rate wasn’t high enough and asked for about 25% more than they were offering. The agent tried to get me to accept on the spot at the original rate, claiming they had a second candidate who would be offered the role if I turned it down. I still turned it down. A few days later the agent called me back saying the client was willing to offer me 5% more than the original rate (so much for the second candidate). The next 2 weeks involved me turning down their offers & the agent coming back to me every other day with 3 to 5% increments from the client on the original rate. The last offer I had from the client was 15% more than the original rate – I turned it down. The next call (and the one that really blew me away) was the agent coming back to me saying that the client still hadn’t found anyone they liked for the role and they were asking if I was still interested/available & then the agent asks me… did I want to ask client for MORE money before he goes back to them (i.e. more than the 25% that I had been holding out for since the beginning of the process). Do I want to ask them for MORE money?!?!?!?!?!!!!!! (I have never been, and have never known anyone else to be, in this situation before with a recruitment agent). I told him to ask for 30% more than the original rate and since he accepted that rate a bit too easily, I am now kicking myself for not having asked for more!
Job 2 – After 2 interviews, this was a job I was offered & accepted & would have been happy to stay with until…
Job 3 - This was with a company that I really wanted to work for & even more so after the interviews because I got such a good feeling from the hiring manager & the others that I met during the interview process. After the first, second & third interview I was offered the role but in the end I decided to turn it down because it was a full time job and I decided that the part time requirement was much more important to me (i.e. I accepted)
When I turned it down, I told them it was because I had accepted a part time job with another company in order to create time to pursue some of my other interests. The hiring manager requested I call her and when I did, she said that (again, I’m completely blown away by this next bit) she would be happy to offer me the role part time rather than lose me. I’ve been assured by some contacts that this is pretty much unheard of – when a company advertises full time role it’s because they need a full time resource. I also took this opportunity to negotiate some more money (albeit the part time percentage of).
I found all of this to be truly amazing for various reasons.
Firstly, I don’t regard myself as particularly great in my field, I’m not amazingly qualified or amazingly experienced or particularly specialized within my field. (I do have 10 years experience in the field, but then so do most of the other people that I know who are struggling to find jobs at the moment).
Second, some things I’ve already mentioned: I was being selective (it’s not like I applied to 100s of jobs or went on 100s of interviews), I know people in the same field who have been out of work for 6 to 12 months & according to everyone I talk to, we’re in a “recession” and here I am receiving 3 job offers in 3 weeks…
There is one thing and one thing alone I attribute these results to: Interview Magic! Other than the specifics I picked up from Interview Magic, I really don’t believe there is anything special that separates me from the other people that I know in my field that are out of work. And even though I had been on the Rapport & Anchoring boot camp, I hadn’t been practicing the skills since the seminar so I can’t even claim to be well versed in the skills - everything I tried I was trying on the fly! I think it just goes to show the real power of these skills - you don’t need to spend years studying & perfecting the skills in order to get them to work – just go out into the world, try them and see what happens.
I did and the results have completely blown me away…
