I am not sure that you heard about the Toyota Prius out of control the other day. This guys car started accelerating up to 90 MPH and he could not stop it.

This morning they played the 911 tapes and the level of panic made him unable to follow the simple instruction that could save his life. PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL.

As I was listening I was reminded of how so may people begin to rationalize what they can’t help themselves. This guy was so panicked that he said he was trying to control the car and could not put it in neutral. His fear had paralyzed him. He could have killed himself or someone else very easily.

Let me say this. If you car starts to accelerate out of control it is VERY easy to pull over. Just put the car into neutral and pull over. Then turn the car off. Your engine is not going to like this. It is going to be loud and scary. You can also just turn off the ignition but your will lose your power steering and power brakes. You can stop the car by using the emergency brake in a controlled manner.

Unfortunately this guy tried to use his emergency brake with the engine in gear. So that burned out pretty quickly.

How many of us do the exact same thing when our lives start getting a little out of control? We let fear make us stupid. We try to jam on the brakes and quickly burn out. We let fear and panic take over and we either do nothing or do something stupid. When fear runs your life you lose whatever ability you had to think and make even the most simple decisions.

Fear is not the only problem. Any out of balance emotion will make you do stupid things.

Much of the financial problems we are in now are because of people thinking with their insecurities. If they have a better care then they will feel worthwhile. Maybe a bigger house will get them the self esteem they are lacking. Maybe buying drinks for everyone on their credit card will win them friends.

It is time to look at the things you are doing in life that sabotage your future. Look at what emotions are driving those decisions. What does that shiny new car help you avoid feeling about yourself? What does that new dress allow you to feel that you normally don’t feel? What does hiding in the corner unnoticed allow you to keep feeling that talking to the girl would make you have to confront?

If you life is out of control then you need to start taking the steps that are needed to take charge of your life. Yes this will suck. It will not feel good to examine yourself honestly. On the other side is the life you always dreamed of or the life you never knew that you wanted.

The common term used is that they are “driven”. That sounds hard but their drive is not effort. It is as if they are pushed along.

I knew a guy who was about to lose everything. He was looking for solutions and highly motivated. To watch him do this was like watching someone who was blindfolded while driving. More things slowed him down that sped him up.

So there I was presenting to a group of business people when the word slipped out of my mouth. I just knew I was going to hear about it but at least I was being honest.

MANIPULATION

It is like a dirty word that that describes what everyone wants to be able to do but never dares say. People desire the ability to manipulate but want to feel like they are above the idea that they want to control other people. So they just change the name. They call it personnel management. They call it persuasion. They call if influence. They call it charisma. I know what they really want and it is control.

The problem is that most people can barely control themselves. So they use the control of others to make it seem like they have some control of their lives. They misuse powerful skills to satisfy their personal weakness. Because they don’t have real control of themselves they abuse others. They might use power or force to threaten others into control. This is the worst use of these kinds of skills.
