Fear Based Life

It is a survival mechanism that is not designed for today’s world yet still functions as the primary mover of the direction your life goes. The design worked great for surviving in the wild but in everyday life it is confusing. The drive to survive is the strongest drive of all. It is based on avoiding danger. The problem is that your brain misinterprets many things in modern life as being the same as a real life threatening danger.  So being in a social situation gets reacted to as life threatening. Taking a financial risk gets coded as life threatening. Asking for directions gets coded as life threatening.

It is not what you are motivated to do that defines your life. It is what you FEAR that defines your life and what you do in order to avoid that fear. Some become shut ins. Others turn to drugs. Even other drink themselves numb. Some just never get ahead because they are so afraid.

Even this time of year when everyone is setting their new year’s resolutions… they are made to fit a direction we find safe and comfortable.

Let me say this again. It is what you fear that defines your life.

When you have a survival reaction to what should be an everyday event then your life is ruled by fear. The truth is that you can’t stop it by willpower, force or thinking happy thoughts. The only way to address it is to disarm the survival mechanism. First you have to know you are doing it.
