“Personal excellence is perhaps the most important of all invisible and intangible assets that you can acquire.”

What a bunch of crap!

I got this today in my email from a well know self-help guru who obviously is a just a parrot of 1950’s self-help junk thinking. Maybe some of you got it as well. The result of such thinking is that you have to achieve excellence so be successful. That is the mindset of the biggest FAILURES I Know. It is a failure trap that so many people fall into that they just accept as fact.  It is like saying I will exercise after I lose 20 pounds. IT NEVER HAPPENS. Instead you sit and wait and plan and research and think and … do nothing.

I want you to think differently RIGHT NOW. Stop the insanity of the personal excellence cult. It is nothing more than smoke and mirrors that hook you into endless product streams to achieve a fantasy.

Let me ask you something.

How would it feel if I were to tell you that you could achieve the life you desire and be completely average?

What would it be like to know that you don’t really have to put in massive amounts of effort to get your life moving?

Can you imagine how it would feel to get rid of all those feelings that make you feel like you need to be excellent to improve your life?

So here is a little secret we discovered while dealing with some of the most successful people on the planet. There are 2 types we have run into. One works their ass off and stresses over every detail. Yes they have money but for the most part their lives suck. They have few friends and they have no time to relax. They are compulsive at what they do and bulldoze their way over people.

The second understands the one secret to success that you will never read in a book about success… You don’t really need to know that much. I had one guy who was a type one ‘success’. He worked his ass off and constantly educated himself to be on the cutting edge of everything in his field. He was mildly successful and extremely knowledgeable. His clients did not like him. They dealt with him because they NEEDED to not because they WANTED to. The result is that he had to work HARD to keep them. So we taught him this one little thing and suddenly his business got EASY!

What was the one thing?

Well if this was a sales letter I would be steering you a link or product I wanted you to buy but I want you to have this right now.

People don’t want or need you to be perfect. They need you to pay attention to them. They want to feel understood. They want to feel connected to you. They want to know that you see them and their lives as real things. Then they want to know you will take care of them. I don’t care if this is managing employees, selling cars, getting a job, meeting the person of your dreams or just ordering a coffee.  You don’t have to be the BEST at this… just better than the last person who was most likely nowhere near average. .

I bet right now you can think of several situations in your life where you have not been paying attention to people. Instead of seeing them you try to run over them. I am willing to give you a challenge today.

For only ONE DAY stop feeling you need to be perfect and start talking to people as if they are people.

For ONE DAY get the idea through your head that average is good enough for now.

For ONE DAY stop trying to push and force your way to the top and listen to what people are trying to tell you.

Notice if things start seeming a little different.

If by some chance this one little secret, that seems obvious I know, makes sense to you then all I ask is that you do something for me. Before you move on with your day, share this post right now. The more people who understand this the more we can defeat the cult of excellence dimwits who will never understand this at all 🙂

  1. Excellent post Tom. I tried for years trying to push myself in every direction thinking I wasnt good enough. I put so much pressure on myself that wasn’t even real (or helpful).

The number one thing I have learnt is you dont have to be perfect and that if you focus on others you can truly get everything you want…
